China's Suspension Bridges:
Suspension bridges make cities work, as evidenced by the earliest structures built in China over 2,000 years ago to speed up the pace of life and commerce across the water. It's not surprising, then, that modern China's sizzling economic growth coincides with the construction in the last decade of three of the world's biggest bridges, helping the country span the gap with the world's major economies.
The Runyang South Bridge, with a span of 1,490 meters (4,888 feet), was completed two years ago. It crosses Asia's largest river, the Yangtze, and is China's latest effort to speed the movement of people and products across water.
China, for its part, isn't finished building. A pair of suspension bridges now under construction there include the Xihoumen Zhoushan Island Bridge (1,650-meter center span) and the Yangluo Bridge (1,280 meters), both of which stand to break onto the list of the world's top 10 once they're completed.
