Japanese ApartmentsA five-month-old baby was caught by neighbors after her mother threw her from the third floor window of a burning building in the western Japan city of Osaka.

A Japanese baby girl escaped injuries in a fire that broke out here Monday after her parents tossed her from the third story of a burning home to residents below, moments before jumping to safety themselves.

The fire started in the three-story structure at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, and burned through about 40 square meters of the second and third floors.

A 5-month-old baby was trapped in the home along with her parents, but several local residents laid bedding on the ground beneath a window on the third floor and told the parents to throw the baby down.

A 47-year-old resident caught the baby girl and she escaped injury.

Soon afterwards, the parents then jumped down from the third floor. The baby's 23-year-old father suffered a broken leg and her 25-year-old mother suffered burns to her throat.

Osaka Prefectural Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
