Chinese Tourist Riding Bronze Ox at Wall Street

The Picture shows a Chinese tourist riding Wall Street's Charging Bull in New York, one of the most recognizable symbols of American capitalism. The picture quickly spread throughout China's major internet discussion forums, making many Chinese feel embarrassed about a Chinese tourist crawling all over the bull like a little kid. The consensus among Chinese was that the Chinese tourist should be condemned for his behavior, which in the mind of many Chinese had shamed China, with one internet bulletin board title pleading: 'Chinese tourists, please behave yourselves!'

However, a few days later, a picture of western tourists riding the bronze ox was posted on a well known overseas Chinese website Mitbbs.Com (未名空间) had a lot of Chinese change their mind: 'were our criticism too harsh for him? Judging from the western tourists who also rode the bull, it looks like it's a very common thing among tourists. If westerners can do it, then the Chinese tourist's behavior should be acceptable as well.'

About Wall Street Charging Bull:

Charging Bull (sometimes called the Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull) is a 7,000 pound bronze sculpture by Arturo Di Modica that sits in Bowling Green park near Wall Street in New York City.

The sculpture depicts a bull, the symbol of aggressive financial optimism and prosperity, leaning back on its haunches and with its head lowered as if ready to charge.

The sculpture is one of the most photographed pieces of art in the city and has become a popular tourist destination for visitors to the Financial District. It has also come to be an unofficial symbol of the Financial District itself, and it often appears in the local news media to punctuate stories about optimism in the financial market.

In 2004, Di Modica announced that the bull sculpture was for sale, on condition the buyer does not move it from its present location.
