Can Beijing Olympics be Compared to Nazi Olympics of 1936

British media compared Beijing 2008 to the Nazi Olympics of 1936, Chinese government was offended: It's a huge insult!

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said that the comparison of Beijing Olympics with Nazi Germany's 1936 Berlin Olympics by British media was "an insult to the Chinese and world people".

When asked if the demonstration by 'Reporters Without Frontiers' during a speech by Beijing Olympic organizing committee President Liu Qi at the Olympic Torch lighting ceremony was embarrassing for China, Qin said it is not for China to feel embarrassed. "The Olympic troublemakers should feel embarrassed."

Qin said that the article by former British Conservative Cabinet Minister and ex-Defence Secretary Michael Portillo in "The Times" who wrote that China is using the Olympic Games for its own self-aggrandizement was groundless, and brought shame on China, so what did Mr. Michael Portillo say? Let's take a look.

From "The Times":

Adolf Hitler’s glee at exploiting the 1936 Berlin Olympics as a showcase for Nazism turned to fury when the black American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals. The Chinese leadership must by now be wondering whether staging the Games in Beijing will bring the regime more accolades than brickbats. Be careful what you wish for, as Confucius probably said.

So China had every reason to expect a trouble-free Olympics that would show its best face to the world. In Berlin the anti-Jewish notices were taken down in the weeks preceding the Games. In Beijing the use of cars has been restricted to reduce air pollution.

With the news blackout imposed by China on the country’s interior we cannot know whether the Tibetan protests are opportunistically linked to the forthcoming Games. But the Olympics are a political factor and the situation is dynamic. The eyes of the world are turned disapprovingly on Chinese policies.
Here we found another article from the Daily Mail.

From "The Daily Mail":

History repeating itself: Beijing 2008 mirrors the 1936 Berlin Olympics which were no more than a hugely successful propaganda coup for Hitler.

Despite the four gold medals of Jesse Owens, the Germans were able to hoodwink the world into believing that they were as civilised a nation as any other.

And now, history is all set to repeat itself.

In fewer than five months, our athletes will once more be playing sports in a nation whose dictatorship is cruelly at odds with the most fundamental freedoms that we in the West take for granted.

Yet again, we are being told that the Olympics will be a force for good, and will help a totalitarian regime to adopt more liberal policies. Such thinking is, at best, hopelessly naive and, at worst, downright deluded.

Those who believe that Beijing 2008 will improve China's shameful human rights record are surely as myopic to the realities of modern China as the appeasers of the 1930s were towards Hitler.

People, who works in the field of media, should know that they have the responsibility to spread the authentic information to the audiance. CNN has posted several news against the Beijing Olympics, and reported groundless news about Tibet. I think this is not the first time they make mistakes. If you know the bomd happened in the 1996 Altanta Olympics, you should recall that Jewell was considered as a suspect from a hero because of the CNN's irresponsible report. Thus, I just think that how much we can trust the "authoritative" media center CNN???

Yes, I totally agree with Isaacneo. You guys are always talking about the transparent, but what have your media done? Did they respect the truth? Tibet belongs to China thousand years ago, longer than American's history..I don't know why those stupid guys who are played by the media think Tibet should be seperated out of China.

When you white people assault the human rights condition in other nations, plz do rethink what's actually happening in your countries. Suppose some ruffians want to break the society's harmony, do you think ur government will just seat themselves there without leaving a shit? Last time I heard some french teachers went on strike due to the fairly low salaries, the police sprayed cn gas to the poor guys. How come you choose to be temporarily blind when attacking others? Tibet? Who knows what really occured? The fuckin journalists posted some partial opinions just for attracting people to read, which is not what they should do. They disobeyed this job's spirit. Boycotting Olympics? Let's clarify the concept first men: since this is not the oblige, if you really donnot wanna participate in this game, then just stay away from it. Who forces you? As the hoster of olympics, we only welcome those who're kind to our nation and people. So do think you words and actions!!!!!!!!

Can anything really be separated from politics? There seems to be alot of deductive reasoning in these comments so i think everyone is limiting their views by making everything so black and white. the olympics is a complex issue and there are alot of questions that people will be asking about the international relations between a number of different countries. eg the big issue at the moment is Tibet yeah? but what about Iraq and the US? how can a country be at war with another yet ignore it over a nice game of soccer or a running race. the whole olympics is a political nightmare sport has very little to do with it.

i agree. sports and politics should be seperate. But, the Olympics are about a culture, history, fair and transparent competition and human achievement. The olympics have always been a way for a country to showcase what its most proud off....but that also means the eyes of the world will also look at the bad. In most countries in the world this is considered very normal...to be able to freely observe, discuss and criticize what is bad about ones own country or about other countries. Yet for some reason China and many Chinese want to be excempt from this. They only want the world to see and discuss what is great about China (of which there are many things), but not want to give anyone the right to look at what is bad about their country. This is called hypocrisy.

sigh....Does it really matter..political issues and sporting issues should be just kept friggin separate. CHina has tried bloody hard over the years to fix its mistakes---give them a break.

So long as we view and judge others through our own culture, values, beliefs and historical experiences, we will always fail to understand others' motivations and perspectives. However much we like/percieve our values to be universal out of pride, comfort, sense of security and convictions, the question of prioritising those values and beliefs remain. Not all nations/cultures may prioritise relevant values/beliefs in an order akin to ours, but in ways that 'they' deem best suit their circumstances and needs.

the issues!

yeah, i'd like some Chinese people to start addressing the real issues. stop whitewashing stuff, or trying to explain things away. if you think youre in the right...explain WHY. Give PROOF of arguments. Come up with plausible EXPLANATIONS. ...but no, that would be too much work, and you'd actually have to think about what you're doing,. instead so many Chinese who always get pissed when someone who is not chinese says somethng about their country, its easier to just not address the issue and instead say "its none of your business" "our history is longer than urs, so ur opinion doesnt count". thats intellectual cowardice

what does "oldest living country" even mean? in what way is 5,000yrs of history an excuse for behaving badly?...and why can't people living in a countries that have a camparatively shorter history not voice their opinions on China's pathetic track record when it comes to what they are up to RIGHT NOW ie human rights, pollution, free speech etc etc. and to "the other guy" above...its time you get over this Chinese history thing. It's not a get out of jail free card. The Chinese gov and the attached bureaucracy is behaving like they are living in the dark ages. 5,000yrs of history is pretty useless if you havnt learned anything from it.

Its kind of funny how these other countries compare China to many things in history, like Hitler as shown above. The Ironic thing is that China is one of the oldest living countries in the world and people are telling them how they should run it. Cant really say that about white peoples countries; they last what, no more than a thousand years. Americano: America has been at war with someone or another since WWII. Its in Iraq where it shouldn't be. Who are you to blame China and saying shame on them.

anyone who has spent enough time in china will realise the awfulness of these games. pathetic jingoism and international manhood measuring from China and its coming out party.   personally i think we should not cover the games, let the athletes turn up and do their thing. ignore everything but sporting achievement, laugh when china wins the medals table by competing in every little event like pingpong that they can win easily and then get on with letting them make everything cheaply and badly.   god awful place.

Typical white people. Their mentality is: if it ain't white, then it ain't right. Most arrogant and racist people in the world are white. Stay out of Asia's business!
