Suicide Statistics in Asians: Why Do People Kill Themselves?

A major difference between suicide in the West and in developing countries is the method. It is known from studies in the West that more women than men attempt suicide, but fewer succeed.
According to WHO suicide rates statistics, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds. Suicide rates all over the world have increased by 5- 62% in the last two decades. Hardly any country is immune to this disease. Which countries are the worst off where suicide is concerned? What is the reason behind the high suicide rate of a country? Given below are analyses of five Asian countries all having a high rate of suicide. (WHO's Suicide Rates 2007 Table attached.)

Given below are analyses of five Asian countries all having a high rate of suicide. (WHO's Suicide Rates 2007 Table attached.)

Japan
Japan is perhaps one of the few countries left in the world where suicide is considered an honorable act, suicide has long been known as a tradition of Japan.More than 30,000 Japanese who kill themselves every year — the second-highest suicide rate in the industrialized world. Japan's suicide rate per 100,000 people stood at 25.5 in 2003, compared with Russia's 38.7, and is about twice that in the United States, according to World Health Organization figures.
More than 32,500 Japanese took their own lives in 2005, up 0.7 percent from the year before, the latest National Police Agency statistics show.
The sense of crisis has only been heightened in recent years with the increasing incidence of group suicides arranged among strangers over the Internet (suicide club, Jisatsu circle). The victims often drive to an isolated spot, seal the windows of their vehicles and asphyxiate themselves with fumes from a small charcoal burner. There is no doubt that group suicide (suicide club, Jisatsu circle) is a serious concern for Japanese society at large.
Japan's recent target is to reduce the number of suicides to 19.4 per 100,000 people by 2016.
South Korea
Since the 1980s, South Korea’s suicide rates showed a steep increase, rising by an annual average of 5.01 percent. South Korea’s suicide rate reached 24.7 people per 100,000, the number of suicide victims climbed to about 12,000 as of 2005. But in 1982, the nation’s suicide rate stood at merely 6.8 persons per 100,000.In Japan, the number is 25.5 suicide victims per 100,000 people. However, an official of the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare said, "Given the sharp rise (in suicides) in recent years, there is a possibility that the suicide rate per 100,000 persons has already surpassed that of Japan."
The sharp rise has apparently been driven by the suicides this year of a few Korean celebrities.
The Internet has also become a powerful tool to find people who want to commit suicide in a group. In March, a Web site called "Gathering of Suicides," which read, "Please contact us if you want to die with us."
On the bulletin board of a major portal site in South Korea, a second-grader from a junior high school had written: "I want to kill myself, but I do not have courage to do so. Can anyone tell me how to die easily?" The reply arrived immediately. It read, "It's not easy to die. If you try to kill yourself by cutting your wrist, you must cut it at least one centimeter deep."
China
A report by health officials in Beijing has found that China has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. More than a quarter of a million people a year are killing themselves - 685 a day. And 3.5 million make unsuccessful attempts. Suicide is now the primary cause of death among Chinese aged 20 to 35.
Chinese people are taking their own lives in record numbers. Recent statistics show that more than 287,000 people commit suicide on the Chinese mainland.
This amounts to a rate of 23 per 100,000 people, which is about twice as many than most Western countries. The report also found that the number of people taking their own lives in rural areas is three time higher than in the cities.
Besides, China is now the only country where suicide rates among women outnumber that of men - Of the total number who end their lives each year, 58 per cent of them are women. (suicide rates around the world are about three times higher for men than women).
Executive director of the group Human Rights in China, Sharon Om, has told reporter this is mainly due to the low socio economic status of women. "Those factors contribute to an increased vulnerability to abuse," she said. "In addition, the rural women have the additional stress that comes from being a families sole caretaker when the men leave to higher paid jobs in the city."
Currently, China only has 19 centres professional suicide intervention institutes which provide consultation to those contemplating suicide.
"There is a very major trend here. It could be because of lack of education, conflicts surrounding the issue of arranged marriages, love failures, dowries and things like that," said Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar, who runs the Sneha Suicide Prevention Center in Chennai, in the Madras region of India.
Once the women have children, they become emotionally and psychologically stronger and the suicide rate goes down.
Overall in India, male suicides start to outnumber the women as they get older, said Vijayakumar.
National and international policies restricting the pesticides that are most toxic to humans may have a major impact on world suicides. Other factors that affect suicide rates such as unemployment, alcohol misuse, divorce and war did not appear to be associated with these declines.
One of the major differences between suicide in the West and in developing countries is the method. It is known from studies in the West that more women than men attempt suicide, but fewer succeed.
Usually, women in Western countries attempt suicide by slashing their wrists or swallowing pills, both methods that are treatable. In rural area of Asian countries, the methods are hanging, poisoning with lethal insecticides that are banned in many other parts of the world and setting oneself on fire. All three are difficult to survive.

India
In some rural areas of India, more than twice as many young women aged 10 to 19 committed suicide as men in the same age group. Study found in those areas, the average suicide rate for women in that age group was 148 per 100,000, compared with 58 suicides per 100,000 men."There is a very major trend here. Sri Lanka
Between 1950 and 1995 suicide rates in Sri Lanka increased 8-fold to a peak of 47 per 100,000 in 1995. By 2005, rates had halved. The researchers investigated whether restrictions on the import and sales of the most highly toxic pesticides in 1995 and 1998 coincided with these reductions in suicide. They found that 19,800 fewer suicides occurred in 1996-2005 compared with 1986-95.National and international policies restricting the pesticides that are most toxic to humans may have a major impact on world suicides. Other factors that affect suicide rates such as unemployment, alcohol misuse, divorce and war did not appear to be associated with these declines.
Suicide Methods
Pesticide ingestion is one of the leading suicide methods. Worldwide, an estimated three million cases of pesticide poisoning occur every year, resulting in an excess of 250 000 deaths. Pesticide self-poisoning is thought to account for an estimated 300,000 deaths in Asia – over a third of the world’s suicides. One of the major differences between suicide in the West and in developing countries is the method. It is known from studies in the West that more women than men attempt suicide, but fewer succeed.

I blame the high ammount of suicides in Asian countries cultural forces. Societies in these countries are very status conscious and almost caste like. Couple that with the psychological pressure that Asian parents tend to place on their children from an extremely young age and that is a recipe for suicide. The age of 17-30 is the time in your life where you begin to realize how your situation or choices are going to affect the rest of your life. If results don't meet expectations some don't have the mental capacity to handle that. Imagine your a 27 year old Japanese man who has had the weight of the world placed on his shoulders by his parents to be a doctor or lawyer and you're an office clerk... Bring on the laundry detergent and roll up the windows.. The only reason I comment on this is that I've been working in Asia for the past 2 years and I have seen these cultural practices and how they bring most young professionals to the brink of insanity. It's sad.

If i remember correctly, I recall that Scandinavians had the world's highest suicide rate. I knew that Japan's suicide rate was exceptionally high, but I had no idea that the same was true for Korea and China.
